Goodwill of Greater Detroit Partners with Maire Elementary School for Community Donation Drive
Students to help collect clothing and household items to support job training
DETROIT (April 7)– Goodwill of Greater Detroit, in partnership with Maire Elementary School, is hosting a community-wide donation drive on Saturday, April 12, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Maire Elementary School, located at 740 Cadieux Rd in Grosse Pointe. Residents are encouraged to donate gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, kitchenware and other household items to support Metro Detroiters facing employment barriers, including those living with disabilities.
Maire Elementary School, a cornerstone of the community since its opening on October 20, 1936, has a longstanding tradition of fostering strong partnerships between students, parents and the community to provide high-quality instructional programs. The school’s mission emphasizes preparing students to be lifelong learners and productive citizens in a dynamic society.
“Engaging students in community service initiatives, such as the donation drive in partnership with Goodwill of Greater Detroit, is a testament to the role of schools in cultivating compassionate individuals,” said Jen Merz, vice president of fund development, Goodwill of Greater Detroit. “This type of charitable involvement helps them understand the importance of giving back, fostering empathy and it instills a sense of social responsibility. By involving students in efforts to support their community, schools like Maire Elementary are not just educating, but also instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment in their students.”
The sale of donated goods at Goodwill stores goes toward helping Detroit area residents build essential skills, gain meaningful employment and achieve greater independence. Last year alone, Goodwill of Greater Detroit assisted over 11,750 individuals with job training, skill building, financial counseling, job placement and other support services necessary for sustainable, fulfilling employment.
