Goodwill of Greater Detroit brings iconic thrift store, donation center to Southfield
Grand opening celebration scheduled for April 24 at 9:30 a.m.
DETROIT (April 17, 2025) – Goodwill of Greater Detroit will celebrate the grand opening of its new Southfield retail store and donation center, located at 28901 Greenfield Rd., on April 24. This will be the nonprofit organization’s eighth retail location in metro Detroit.
The grand opening celebration will kick off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m., featuring remarks from Goodwill leadership and Southfield city officials. Doors will open to the public at 10 a.m. The first 50 customers will receive a gift.
“The popularity of thrift shopping is on the rise, with more people wanting to give new life to gently used goods, keeping them out of landfills,” said Jeff Ukrainec, vice president of Donated Goods Retail, Goodwill of Greater Detroit. “Our new location in Southfield not only expands our footprint in Detroit area, it also provides greater levels of convenience for area residents seeking a responsible way to declutter and for shoppers interested in thrifting.”
In addition to its commitment to increasing environmental sustainability, the new Southfield store expands Goodwill’s ability to provide free job training and workforce development opportunities for individuals in Southfield and across the region.
“While Goodwill retail stores have become iconic fixtures of the communities we serve, what many people don’t realize is that these stores play a pivotal role in our mission,” said Dan Varner, CEO, Goodwill of Greater Detroit. “Ninety-two cents of every dollar generated at Goodwill of Greater Detroit stores is reinvested into our community, funding free workforce development and job training programs for individuals living with disabilities and other barriers to employment.”
Some of Goodwill’s programs include the Detroit Career Center, which provides work-related skills development and support services for those living with intellectual and developmental disabilities; A Place of Our Own Clubhouse, which provides programs and employment opportunities for those living with mental illness; and the Goodwill of Greater Detroit Skilled Trades Academy, which provides hands-on training and certifications for careers such as welding.
Donations of new and gently used goods are now being accepted in Southfield. Metro Detroiters also can make donations or shop at Goodwill of Greater Detroit’s other locations in Canton, Commerce, Dearborn, Livonia, Madison Heights, Woodhaven and Ypsilanti.
