Making sure individuals are receiving the right services to obtain employment at a self-sufficient wage has become my passion.

Detroit native, Shanell Shelby, has been a key driver toward Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit’s mission by preparing and guiding job seekers into employment. As the program manager for Goodwill’s North Oakland Career Center, which partners with Oakland County Michigan Works!, Shanell finds passion and alignment in Goodwill’s mission to improve and increase employment in the local community.

Shanell wakes up every day excited to support those who are ready to put in the effort to start or advance their career. She credits her team for her inspiration and motivation, particularly her Managers, Felicia R. Hunter, Executive Vice President of Employment and Training, and Jennifer Llewellyn, Manager of Oakland County Workforce Development, saying they are great role models.

“When you love your job, you love coming to work. Making sure individuals are receiving the right services to obtain employment at a self-sufficient wage is not only an everyday job, but has become my passion,” says Shanell. “I am truly blessed.”

Goodwill’s North Oakland Career Center is a customer focused workforce development program that helps guide individuals seeking employment and advancing their occupation knowledge and skills. Located in Highland and Novi, Mich., the career centers provides career consultation, job search resources, free technology, workshops, events and training programs to job searchers. Workshops are offered on a regular basis teaching resume writing, networking, interviewing, soft skills and social media. The Center also hosts job fairs, on-site interviews, guest presenters and local talent events.  Employment services are free and offered to the public with a Priority of services for Veterans.

“I have witnessed the impact North Oakland Career Center has on those who are willing to put in the time and effort to gain skills to secure a job, “says Shanell. “Goodwill provides a variety of beneficial resources and services that allow people to reach their career goals.”

With almost nine years at the North Oakland Career Center, Shanell says, “There is nothing better than knowing you are impacting someone and helping them create a better life.”

Having started at the North End Career Center as a service coordinator with a role focusing on orientations and revamping skills assessments, Shanell now serves as the program manager where she oversees the entire career center office.

In her free time, Shanell enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. For years, she has been an encouraging influence to those who have reached out to the North Oakland Career Center, along the way becoming a hero to many.
