Volunteer Opportunity
We have an opportunity for you!
The
Detroit Tigers playing season has now started and we are
promoting our Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop. At-risk youth who
are a part of the program go through an intense 16-week
training. They get hands-on experience by working at the
PartnerShop. These individuals, after their experience
through the Goodwill program, are qualified for employment.
We need your help. We are are starting a Ben & Jerry’s
Street Team, and we need 10 individuals who are willing to
be a part of this team twice per month. The team of
individuals will promote Ben & Jerry’s by passing coupons
out to those going to the Detroit Tigers games.
This is an exciting opportunity. If you or your school/group
are interested in being a part of the team, please contact
Rae Lynn Harvey at 313-557-8794.

Literacy and Basic Math Tutors
Tutors are needed at virtually all locations to improve the
skills of trainees. No previous teaching experience is
required. Literacy Volunteers of America will train
volunteers. Once trained, volunteers will choose which
location and which population they prefer to assist. For
this program, weekly commitments are requested.
Computer Applications Tutor
Tutors in this program must be adept at a common computer
application such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc., and
understand Internet access. Also, computer game instructors
are needed for the Holly Drop In Center. Commitments from
weekly to monthly are available.
Career Boosters
These volunteers enhance trainees’ vocation exposure. They
may offer job shadowing to provide trainees with an
understanding of what a particular job entails. Also
inspirational speakers, career presenters, mock
interviewers, and persons with backgrounds in hairdressing,
barbering, clothes selection or personal hygiene are needed.
Monthly or occasional commitments are acceptable.
Life and Community Skills
Share your expertise with our trainees. Personal finance,
time management, crafts and cooking, healthy living and
stress management are only a few of the suggested skills
needed by our programs. Also, we need inspirational speakers
and people willing to manage our voter registration program.
Occasional or monthly commitments are available.
Newsletter
Survey graduates, employers, and corporate partners for
inspirational outcomes. Prepare articles for internal
newsletter. Requires good phone and writing skills.
Event
Planning and Assistance
Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has many special
events throughout the year that require extra hands and
minds. Holiday parties, trainee lunches, Toys for Tots and
award events need planning, setting up, decoration and clean
up. The annual Antique Show and Golf Outing provide for many
hours of interesting activity. Also, the volunteer
department always needs people with administrative skills
for mailings, tracking and registrations. Also needed, a
Birthday Coordinator at various sites.
Junior Group
The Junior Group is the major fundraising auxiliary for
Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit. Its annual Antiques
Show is a premier cultural event in the metropolitan area.
Membership in the Junior Group is open to women of the
community who support Goodwill’s mission and enjoy collegial
activities. No expertise in antique collection is necessary.
Greeters
Greet visitors and trainees at various sites. Direct or
guide them to their destinations and provide forms and
documents to new arrivals. Most of all, be a friendly face
and welcome those who may be scared and confused. Weekly or
semi-weekly commitment preferred.
Program Outreach
Contact school counselors, special education teachers and
students, and other education professionals to provide
information concerning our youth programs. Also provide
outreach to community groups and professional organizations.
Must be comfortable in group settings, and be willing to
become a knowledgeable Goodwill ambassador. Commitment
varies.
