Jobs Employment and Training (JET)

Goodwill's North Oakland Career Centers provide Job Readiness Training & Job Search assistance services to person receiving Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) and Friend of the Court referrals. This program accepts persons referred by the Oakland County Family Independence Agency and Friend of the Court participants that reside in Oakland County.

Each participant attends Job Readiness Training. This two-week training provides participants the opportunity to prepare their skills to successfully secure and maintain employment.

In addition to the Job Readiness Training, participants are required to engage in active job search activities using the Resource Center that provides the tools and technology to search for potential employment opportunities. Participants work in cooperation with Job Developers who provide Job Placement assistance and job leads. Each participant’s interests, aptitudes and skills are matched with the employer’s job requirements. Pre- and post-interview counseling is conducted to evaluate how the participant performed on his/her last job interview and to discuss ways to prepare for the next interview, if needed.

To assist with job retention, the Service Center provides Employment Follow-up/Retention Services. This on-going service is provided to ensure that both parties are totally satisfied. Participants and/or employers are provided the guidance, supports and resources necessary to address barriers or concerns that my impact the participant’s job retention.

North Oakland Career Centers provide Supportive Services to participants. Services include referrals for such services as child care, medical and mental health assistance, and facilitating the participants’ obtaining financial assistance for such items as mileage, car repair, auto insurance, work-related clothing and other work-related items.

Participants who require additional training, such as English as a Second
Language (ESL), General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation, basic/remedial education, or occupational skills, are referred to other community agencies.

The North Oakland Career Centers provide Case Management activities as necessary to assist participants to achieve employment and at sufficient wage and hours to result in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Food Stamp closure. Examples of such activities include: Enrollment of participants into Post-Employment training Programs; consulting with the participant’s Family Independence Agency Specialist to address situational barriers; and utilizing other community agencies for additional necessary services.
